Un tempo, era chiamato “Snap dog” che significa “cane scatto” ed il nome era appropriato, allora, quando era adoperato per la caccia al coniglio selvatico. Questi, uscendo da un anfratto per entrare in un altro, compie i suoi movimenti con una velocità incredibile, cambiando continuamente direzione: bloccarlo è quindi un compito difficilissimo e che richiede velocità e agilità fenomenali nel cane preposto alla caccia. Il Whippet eccelleva in questo e costituiva un grande divertimento per il pubblico che accorreva numeroso ad assistere alle prove. Queste cacce “Rabbit cursing” ancor oggi si svolgono qualche volta come manifestazioni private ed altre come eventi cinofili sportivi, con rilascio di certificati attitudinali. Il ruolo principale odierno del Whippet è quello di corridore: frequentemente hanno luogo, in Gran Bretagna, nei grandi cinodromi, come per i più grossi Greyhounds, corse riservate ai Whippets. In alcune regioni del Nord, si svolgono poi corse speciali esclusivamente per cani di questa razza e che appassionano in particolar modo minatori e gli operai di quelle zone i quali intervengono numerosi sia come proprietari di cani in lizza, sia come spettatori. Con lo stesso orgoglio con cui il gran signore fa correre il proprio puro sangue equino al Derby, così il più modesto minatore reca al Whippeting il suo cane addestrato per lungo tempo con cura appassionata e paziente. La gara si svolge su piste diritte, lunghe circa 300 metri, su cenere, oppure su erba fine. Attualmente la partenza avviene con il sistema meccanico della “trappola” che si apre improvvisamente. Sino a poco tempo addietro, invece, queste partenze costituivano di per sé uno spettacolo. Entrava infatti in scena un personaggio importante: lo “slipper”. Questi, preso il cane concorrente sotto il collo con una mano e la base della coda con l’altra, aveva il compito di lanciare il Whippet che, ripreso contatto con il suolo, iniziava la corsa con sbalzi fenomenali, talora oltre i quattro metri di lunghezza. Meglio il cane veniva “lanciato” dallo slipper maggiore era il vantaggio per il resto della corsa. All’arrivo si trovava il proprietario del cane che con grida lo chiamava sventolando il fazzoletto. Sulle origini, si sa che discende dal Greyhound incrociato probabilmente con il Fox, successivamente con il Bull e - si dice anche – con il piccolo Levriero Italiano. Esse risalgono a circa un secolo fa; il riconoscimento da parte del Kennel Club avvenne attorno al 1900. Fuori dell’Inghilterra è diffuso negli U.S.A. e un po’ ovunque, considerato un simpatico, attraente cane da compagnia. Nella sua apparenza generale denota potenza di muscoli e forza meravigliosamente bilanciate unite a grande eleganza e grazia di linee. |
